11 May Passivehaus Conference Sydney 2023
There were some high level speakers at the Passivhaus conference in Sydney on 4 & 5 May 2023. Passivhaus buildings use 80-90% less energy.
Introba and the Victorian government are working together to improve the Australian Building standards to meet world climate needs to make a difference to climate change.
The five main principles of a Passivhaus are:
- Airtightness (very little air leakage/draughts stop warm or cool air from transferring in/out of the building)
- Thermal Insulation (high insulation in the ceiling, walls, floor)
- Mechanical Ventilation Heat Recovery unit manages heat and cool air, and filters the air. Â This leads to fewer pollutants in the air and a lower risk of condensation meaning a healthier indoors. You can still open your windows!
- High Performing Windows (triple glazed, with thermal bridge to stop heat from transferring in/out of the building via the frame
- Thermal Bridge Free by reducing the materials that allow heat/cold to transfer in and out of the building eg. metal is a heat conductor, if it’s insulated, then you have less heat movement in the building
These talks were informative and inspiring as to why Passivhaus is needed even more than ever. Thanks Tamara for putting these together for us

Ben Sinclair – CornerBlock (Gold Coast)
There are a couple of glossy videos that do it some justice.  It’s a $10M commercial project – so not quite in my budget!  But really; we just found the guy to be very inspiring.  He was very open and honest with how uneducated he was about PH and the stuff-ups he made along the way, the immense privilege that afforded him the opportunity to take such risks, and is keen to share for others to learn and make the world a better place.
